Making Money on a Trip to Milan

August 27, 2025

A trip to Milan, Italy. With Ryanair. This was the cheapest trip of my life: travel and accommodation together, packed into 100 euros.

To cut costs, I booked the ticket without luggage. Just a backpack. But of course, my luck is legendary. My camera bag crossed Ryanair’s allowed size, so now I had to pay a 75 euro fine. If you count the return flight, that would be another 75. A 100 euro trip with 150 euros in fines.

I was sad, pulling out my credit card to pay, and right then they told me they could not let me board.

Apparently airlines overbook all the time. They sell more tickets than they have seats, because a lot of people miss flights and the airline profits. But today, for some reason, everyone showed up.

So under EU rules, they transferred 250 euros to my account as compensation.

They also booked tomorrow’s flight for free.

Tonight in Milan, I was supposed to share a hostel room with four people. Here I am instead, typing this status from a five-star hotel with free dinner, breakfast, and lunch vouchers, smiling like an idiot.

For the first time, I went on a trip and ended up making money. Life is beautiful. 😂🐣
