What Would You Grab in a Fire?
If the building ever caught fire, what would I grab on the way out? A first-aid kit? Some dry food? I’d thought it all through. But when the moment actually came, I grabbed my FX3 and the G Master lenses. Ammu went for her gold. My wife went for her certificates.
We heard the fire was on the fifth floor — we’re on the eighth. I got Ammu and Simi down safely. The whole building was out on the street by then, everyone panicking, everyone dialing 999 for the fire service.
The fire was in the fifth-floor kitchen. The guard had noticed that the family up there had gone out somewhere — they must have left something switched on, and now the kitchen was burning and it could spread any second.
But when I looked more carefully, it wasn’t quite the kitchen. The fire was burning in the bathroom.
The guard and a few others broke the door down to put it out.
Turns out, with the elders of the house away, the husband and wife who’d stayed behind had lit a whole bunch of candles in the bathroom to set the mood for a little romance…
I mean, what kind of city do we live in — a man can’t even get a little love around here!
