I stared in amazement at the girl’s scattered brain. Much of it had spilled out onto the black asphalt, red, like a coiled rope.

Billions of bloodied neurons. Neurons that had held all kinds of dreams. The dream of becoming an engineer. The dream of marrying me. The dream of becoming a mother.

With one measured but perfect blow, I had successfully ended those dreams.

And yet the brain was strangely beautiful. Bloodied with red dreams.
